Shattered Love is a very angsty heartbreaking romance about two best friends becoming lovers and then becoming enemies on the road of ensuing revenge against one another. A lot of angst and hate are present in this story, and is basically the entire revolving theme of the book. The amount of angst in this book is surreal that I just ate it like crazy, and my heart broke for the main characters. I’m a huge sucker for childhood friends getting a second chance at love type of stories, and this one definitely fit the bill.
Damien and Bria were the typical pristine couple while growing up, but dire circumstances left them start to hate and seek out years of revenge towards one another. It’s definitely a book that deals with a lot of the main characters’ emotions with each other, and both of them trying to destroy but still see the attraction and love between them. I especially enjoyed how they would have moments of their sweet, vulnerable sides appear, but then later on sharp claws and teeth come biting them. It’s a precarious tug of war between them, and I really enjoyed reading it.
The only thing I did not enjoy was the way the back stories and flashbacks were told. Personally, I prefer my flashbacks being told on the timelines they needed to be, so I could get a more in-depth understanding on the history behind it. There were times I was thrown off the loop from the story because I wasn’t sure if I was in the present or in the past since the flashbacks were being told from the characters’ lengthy conversations. It’s a small bookish pet-peeve of mine to read characters reminiscing their pasts in very long conversations with one another that takes up chapters of them just talking, when it could have been better read as an entire flashback scene that I might have enjoyed more.
Over-all, this is a very well-executed debut novel that made me eager to know how this story would eventually turn out, especially with that massive cliffhanger at the end.
